What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease or Gingivitis is a health condition that causes inflammation in your gum because of bacterial infection. Poor oral hygiene can cause the bacterial infection which leads to Gum disease. If the condition is not treated on time, it may advance into tooth loss and other severe infections like periodontal disease.

What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

The symptoms of gum disease may not always show up. That is why it is difficult to detect this condition at the early stage. However, there are some symptoms that you may experience if you have gum disease, such as red and tender gums which are swollen. If you have bleeding gums particularly when you brush. There might be instances when you will notice that the gums may have pulled away from the teeth. You may also develop an infection between teeth and gum. You can experience moderate to severe pain in the gum while chewing something. Loose teeth are also one of the major symptoms of gum disease. Also, you can experience bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing.

What are the Causes of Gum Disease?

Gum diseases like Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease are mostly caused by the bacteria in the dental plaque. Plaque forms soon after we eat and is a sticky substance. Our immune system releases substances to fight against bacteria but with Gingivitis or Periodontal Disease it can not fight the damage to the gum and teeth. Also it can damage your periodontal ligament or alveolar bone.

Seeing a dentist aboutGum disease should not be avoided. So, as soon as you notice any complication in your gums you should immediately book an appointment with the dentist. At the early stage, you may have gingivitis which can be treated and cured as this condition is reversible. However, early detection of gum disease is very important so a regular dental check-up is very important as you may not develop any symptoms at the early stage and you may end up having a more severe condition if not treated on time.

Prevention of gum disease is only possible by following a proper oral hygiene routine and check-ups. So, brushing your teeth twice daily or more is important. Also visiting your dentist from time to time is crucial. Healthy eating is very important to achieve good dental health so try to eat a balanced diet.

Common Ayurvedic Remedies for Gum Disease

  • Neem is an effective way to help keep healthy gums. Put neem leaves in boiling water and boil off ¾ of the water. This makes a great mouthwash you can gargle with. Kill bacteria and leave a fresh clean mouth.
  • A very famous Ayurvedic process of curing Gingivitis is oil pulling with sesame oil. In order to do that, simply pour a tablespoon of sesame oil inside your mouth and gradually pull the oil left and right, front and back and gargle properly and then start a chewing motion and then spit the oil out. Do this for almost 15 to 20 minutes repeatedly.
  • Triphala tea is known to have antiplaque agents like 0.2% chlorhexidine. It is considerably helpful in decreasing plaque build-up and gingival swelling. Triphala tea can be used as mouthwash. To prepare this, boil 100 grams of powdered Triphala in 4 cups of water and then reduce to half. Use this as mouthwash twice daily.
