What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that occurs due to damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is very important for good vision. This is caused by atypically high pressure in the eyes. This condition is considered to be one of the major reasons for blindness for people over 60. However, it can occur at any age under certain circumstances. Glaucoma is a severe condition, and it is not possible to recover from vision loss caused by this eye disorder.

What are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

In most of the cases, Glaucoma has no symptoms. However, there are symptoms that develop at the later stage of the disease. The main symptom of Glaucoma is loss of vision. You may also experience redness in your eyes, eye pain, vomiting, and seeing halos around light.

What are the Causes of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is mostly caused by putting pressure or having injury in your eyes, however there are other causes that may trigger this condition such as distending eye drops, obstructed or limited drainage in your eye, weak or decreased blood flow to your optic nerve, high or elevated blood pressure.

When to see a Doctor?

You need to see an eye specialist immediately if you experience any symptoms related to Glaucoma such as eye pain, severe headache, or blurred vision.

Prevention of Glaucoma is possible by following some preventive measures. The most important measure is to do a regular comprehensive eye exam. That might help you detect Glaucoma in its early stage. Also, if you have a family history of Glaucoma then you are at a higher risk. In that case, you need to be more frequent for your eye tests. There are some prescribed eye drops which you may use to reduce the risk of getting Glaucoma. I am sure that will help you prevent this condition. Wearing eye protection tools during sports activity or any other activity which may injure your eyes is also very much important to avoid Glaucoma.

  • Herbs such as Punamava, Jatamamsi, Shanka Pushpi are used to treat this condition. Mix all the herbs preferably 1 teaspoon in a cup of water and boil for 2 minutes. Then drink the tea two times daily.
  • Using triphala tea as eye wash is also recommended. This will help you alleviate tension in your eyes. To make this tea, simply boil half a teaspoon of triphala in a cup of water for about a couple of minutes and filter it out properly and make sure there will be no particles remaining in the tea. Wash your eyes with this tea after cooling it down.
