What is Mahanimba?
Mahanimba, also known as the Bakain tree, is a deciduous tree of the family Meliaceae. In Ayurveda, it is primarily used for its anthelmintic effect, which means it’s used to fight worm infestation. It is also called ‘Parvatanimba’ because it grows commonly in hilly areas. It is bitter and astringent. Additionally, the seeds are used for piles, prameha, liver disorders, and kuṣṭha.

Mahanimba is commonly used for:
- Treating Ascariasis (parasitic roundworm)
- Treating eczema, ringworms, itching on skin, burns
- Treating kidney problems, increased uric acid, serum creatinine
- Treating piles
- Treating scabies, carbuncles and abscess, wounds
Mahanimba Dosage
Bark Decoction: 5-10g or as prescribed.
Powdered root: 1-2g or as prescribed.
Powdered fruits: 1-2g or as prescribed.
Powder: 1-3g or as prescribed.

Mahanimba Side-effects and Warnings
Common side-effects: It may cause mouth burning, blood vomiting, and production of abnormally small amounts of urine.
Not so common side-effects: It may cause skin allergy. The stem bark and root bark may cause temporary side effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It is unsafe to use Mahanimba in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Children: Not known.

Mahanimba has been known to exhibit antifertility effects in both men and women. It reduces male fertility by decreasing the daily production of sperms and sperm motility.
